Owner Glenn Lane claimed Teriyaki Stake from David Vance early in the 1985 Meadowlands meet. I trained for Glenn. TS was a gorgeous, stout filly with ankles that looked like grapefruits. Could not get her sound enough to train never mind re-enter. Sent her to New Bolton and I will never forget the letter they sent back.
TS will never race again and will probably not be able to support carrying a foal. Ouch!
After an extended all out barn effort - and a nearly fatal setback - she got back to the races for a $16,000 tag. As she went into the starting gate I turned to Glenn and said that I had done my job.
TS won that night. That was gravy. We sent her to NY and I believe we ran her for $20,000. She finished second and was claimed. We were sick when we got the claim
slip.

I have also wondered about Bafferts wild success rate shipping into Monmouth. When AP arrived here on Wednesday, I listened to a group of sportswriters toss out possible clues as to why his horses perform so well here. Some observations were well above my pay grade. One thought is that the weather, humidity, & temperature at Del Mar is very similar to that of the Jersey Shore made the most sense to me. AP arrived close to the race. Not much time for a negative adjustment - if one was coming. Runs his race. Ships out Monday morning.

The wildest name I can recall was Cunning Stunt. How did that get by? On a person note, I named my best 2yo after my wife, Linda the Nag. Surprise, she\'s now my ex-wife.

Before Big Browns Belmont I raised a question. Would Real Quiets\' narrow defeat in his Belmont affect Desarmeaux on Big Browns big day? I would say it did. Kent was as confused post race as any rider I\'ve ever heard interviewed.
War Emblem, with a pretty one dimensional running style, broke in a tangle & lost all chance. A closer look at why he broke so poorly would show that War Emblem did not warm up at all prior to post time. He walked nearly the whole time after leaving the post parade to entering the gate. The NYRA had absolutely no interest in investigating Oscar Barrera. Since our stable could stay close to Oscar in the standings, two situations developed. We somewhat legitamized him & we brought our success into question. This infuriated me. Mike Sedlacek & I were busting our butts trying to build a solid NY division. I knew the extent that our owners, Glenn Lane & Oak Manor Farm went to be competitive. I met with the Racing commission & asked that we be observed in any manner that the NYRA deemed suitable. Line the barn with undercover agents, stay as long as you want, speak to anyone you like. I offered complete unfettered access - all this with one caveat - make Oscar your next stop. Our offer was flatly declined.
Until,Shifty Sheik, Oscar turned himself off prior to the start of each Belmont Spring meeting. That marked Laz Barrera\'s return from California. I always thought that Laz would not tolerate the embarassment. Only when Oscar overstepped his bounds was he \"stopped\".

Not so sure about \"Luck\".
Shifty trainer, hidden ownership, arrogant 10 lb. bug rider with a bumbling agent & worst of all a fatal breakdown. Just what the casual or potential racing fan needs to be made aware of. Only saver character may be Nick Nolte\'s - a la the real Lucien Laurin.
The sound of the breakdown & the subsequent euthanization is exactly the ammunition that PETA, ASPCA & every other well meant but over the top animal rights group is looking for to get our game banned. Tragedy is part of sport. The fact that thoroughbreds sometimes give their \"all\" for us is something that should be in our consciousness but not in our eyesight.

Life at Ten & Zenyatta had one annoyong similarity - Jerry Bailey. Velasquez was clearly trying to focus on his horse while Bailey was interrogating him during the warm up period. Pletcher said that he asked that Life at Ten be warmed up good & that didn\'t happen. If the rider had the extra time to focus, rather than being accomodative, he may have been able to save the publics money & racings embarrassment.
Could be similar situation with Zenyatta. Early in the race she was trying to get a feel of the racing surface. Her \"dance\" was normal but I don\'t recall the \"pawing\" in other pre races. Any additional warming up by Smith could not have hurt her.
I understand TV\'s desire to bring viewers inside the heads of the participants but lets not compromise the event.

Garcia \"gave\" the race away on the first turn not the second. He was actually outside of Zenyatta, in about the 4 or 5 path with no one inside him, around the entire first turn. What made him think that was a good idea? Maybe riding to instructions? Doubt it.

You bring up some very interesting points that you may not know are connected.
Zito ran 4 horses that day. 2 won & paid more than $40.00 Birdstone paid around $75.00 & Royal Academy just happened to finish right behind Smarty Jones at 27-1. Can anyone recall another trainer having a day like that?
If any rider has moved early in a Belmont it is BB\'s rider, KD. His premature move on Real Quiet proved to be one of the costliest noses in racing history. The Triple Crown, $5,000,000 Visa bonus, winners share of Belmont purse, Horse of The Year & the stud fees that go along with all that.
Did I mention that the house horse, Victory Gallop, was the beneficiary of KD\'s impatience?
2.5 minutes is a long time. Stranger things have happened.
