Super Frolic, 10 furlongs, and TGI

TGJB -

I\'m curious about the decision to run Super Frolic at 10 furlongs again, given that his two negative numbers were at 8.5.  Do you consider the 10f an advantage (to prove his ability to get the distance) or a disadvantage of running in this spot?

On a related topic (since Pine Bluff\'s TGI pattern suggests Super Frolic should have distance ability), how good do you think the TGI is as an indicator of a horse\'s likely ability to get 10f?  Have you ever done any figure-based studies of horses stretching out for the first time to see if horses having sires with a favorable distance TGI are less likely to produce an off race (for example)?  I know that when I did some amateur statistics using the Derby archives, I didn\'t find the TGI to be a useful indicator of ability to get the Derby distance.

Respectfully,

Bit-- I consider the distance to be neither a plus or a minus, but a question mark, less so than I did last time, given that he had that trip and still ran a decent number. It\'s also a question mark for 2 other relevant horses (even more than for us, since they haven\'t tried it).

No, we haven\'t done studies like that, in part because we didn\'t think of it, but probably won\'t anyway because of the small number of races that long here. If we did do it, something like you describe would be the study to run-- how they run vs. previous top.

Basically, my gut feel is that the TGI would be a decent indicator, but I would also look at the dam side, and of course the horse\'s history at the longer distances he has run, and to some degree, running style.

STB-- that\'s the first I\'m hearing about big soft turf efforts causing bounces. We haven\'t done a study, and the details matter-- like, whether they did the same study for firm turf big efforts. I would be interested in knowing more.

Jerry:

Not a formal study, but an article by Jim Quinn a couple of years back contending that horses who run well over a soft turf track gradient (per DRF) of 30 or more seldom win their next out.

I don\'t have a copy of it, but I believe it was in the DRF Simulcast Weekly.
