Interesting article by Haskins regarding Lani today http://cs.bloodhorse.com/blogs/horse-racing-steve-haskin/archive/2016/05/18/tapit-s-rising-son.aspx  I noticed he got a decent figure finishing 9th due to the wide trip.  The sheets say 4w on the 2nd turn, Haskins says 12w.  Perhaps Lani\'s figure should be better?  I think he ran 1 3/8 miles in the Derby.

The only way for me to find a decent third horse in this field is to pretend I have Nyquist and Exaggerator to win the pick 6. When I do that, I am more frightened of Lani than of any of the new shooters. I will use him with the top two probably and turn Japanese.

As the only one (I believe, oh and Kevb) that touted Lani prior to the derby. I am very familiar with his trip in that race.

After watching the race too many times, it is my opinion that Lani wasn\'t 10-12 wide until half way through the last turn. Prior to that he was only hmm in the 4 or 5 path. If it had been golf he would have been assessed a two stroke penalty. Maryland might suit him, wasn\'t it Pimlico that a horse ran outside of a starting gate, disappearing from sight and still reappeared to win or hit the board? >>>>     Wide Trip

Couple that with his propensity to walk out of the starting gate and you have a horse better suited to one of the Two Mile Stakes Races in Tokyo or Australia.

I\'m convinced the horse has a burst, as the article references, but until he learns to get out of the gate and save some ground he has no chance. Then there is the issue of he only runs when he wants to?

Maybe the Belmont but the Preakness? Price s/b generous and we\'ve seen stranger things.

Agreed. He was never 12 wide when travelling on a turn. 4 wide on the final turn seems about right. Then, approaching the quarter pole he moved out to the 6 path for a run, and then Mo Tom pushed him out even farther as they straightened for the wire.

According to Trakus, Lani traveled 13 ft farther than Nyquist and 17 ft farther than Exaggerator. Look at the ground saving trips of Gunrunner and SBN. And Mor Spirit 5 wide to 8 wide the entire trip. +81 feet! Tsk, tsk Gary Stevens.

Others claimed on here that notwithstanding the fast appellation, the track had a fair amount of moisture content and horses that got hit with kickback had mud on their chests.  It is possible that Gary Stevens was riding a prissy horse who doesn\'t like to get mud on his hair.  I don\'t know any of this for sure, it is pure speculation.

Runs with his head so close to the ground, probably didn\'t want the kickback in his eyeballs. Should\'ve heeded to the seminar and tossed him the second that storm hit.

Mor Spirit is kept out in the clear by design, his preferred comfort zone, like many horses.
