Quick question on figure making
« on: December 06, 2017, 08:51:46 AM »
Hey everyone. Sorry for the novice level question but a friend asked me this the other day and I couldn’t answer it.

With respect to thorograph figures, how much arbitrary input goes into figure making vs a set formula based on the results of a given race?

I was also asked, but gave an answer to this, but curious what others think on the topic, how to do you optimize TG sheets for lightly raced or unraced 2 year olds?

Thanks in advance!

Bluechip,

I’ll leave the “arbitrary input” question to JB, however if Miff was still posting you would get an interesting point of view.😎

As for 2 yr. olds and lightly raced horses I’ve found quite a few pricy diamonds in the rough on the dam’s side of the page over the years. You’ll not find that data anywhere else but here.....

Good luck,

Frank D.

To your first question, there are always formulas applied to the relationships within the race. Relative to other races on the day, there is judgement involved. I would like to think it\'s not arbitrary.

Bluechip-to add to Frank Ds point, in 2 year old races time spent is time rewarded in a difficult area of the game. Any dam that ran less than a 10 as a 2 year old gets a bonus point, less than 7 , 2 bonus points. etc.I will also look at 2d dams since there may have been an unexplained reason the first dam had no 2 year old number. As Frank stated, , TGraph provides a weslth of info re trainer intentions, trainer jockey combo etc. Two year old races are often impossible and can often be guessing games—but patience and hard work can be rewarding.

BT - much of breeding  info re 2 year olds  on sheets goes back several generations- often 3d and 4 th dams. I assume if not published by TG with respect to a particular horse, it is not available. Jerry or Alan can correct me if Inam mistaken.

Thanks a lot for the answers everyone. Very much appreciated.

Special thanks to Jerry. As you noted, arbitrary was the wrong word. Thanks for weeding through my obtuseness.

Now I am confused.  The first mare listed on the right is the filly/colts dam and each subsequent horse is an offspring, so a sib(or half sib) of the one in question.  Is that what you\'re referring to?  If so, have I been reading that wrong all this time?
