only 2 horses ran neg figs in the triple crown

I want to go back through the archives and check out when the last time that happened?

seems like there are always complaints about \"this crop being weak\" but seems like the figures back up that view this year

someone commented earlier in the week that 8 out of the top 10 or so were knocked out before the triple crown (which sounded about right to me)

so, combination of small foal crop plus a few more of the top 10 than usual getting knocked out produced a triple crown with very few fast figures run

When both the Derby and Belmont are won by horses that don\'t run a negative figure, it\'s hard to argue anything other than, AT THIS POINT, this is a weak 3 year old group

Hey Jim,

Most telling sign of this weak crop was the manner in which Chrome was easily defeating the others without really running too fast/all out. In the Belmont, CC registered his worst internal for 6 races, only got beat 1 3/4 lenghts while empty in a 26 second last quarter, that after doing little running throughout.That close to the TC from a horse that turned out to be over the top to boot...weak crop indeed!

Shared Belief(never dirted) is very impressive in Cali and if he can transfer ability from synth to dirt, will be one of the top/fastest 3yr olds before years end.Runs holes in the wind with multiple moves,if you\'ve never seen him.

Several that observed Constitution all winter in Florida thought he would emerge as a top 3 yr old also.

Well it depends how you count, as you say. If we\'re judging the crop by how they performed in the Triple Crown Races, you are right. But,

By my count, of the classic runners in last year\'s crop, 11 had a 0 or better somewhere on their sheet by the time the Belmont was over.  This year I think that number is around 14.  That includes horses like Beyern, who got their best number not in a triple crown race. But it doesn\'t include horses that didn\'t try at least one of the classics.

So maybe not as fast at the top, but deeper.

I think there are some nice ones in this crop that will develop later in the season.  So I\'m not willing to say weak crop yet.  And there are a few of them that have run fast already.

For now I\'m just glad we won\'t have to listen to anymore talk about Social Inclusion.  

Also, for what it\'s worth, re: Chrome, I don\'t think the jock had the same horse under him.  May have been the culmination of tough efforts, the hoof injury, getting stuck down inside, or the distance.  Tough to say.  But I don\'t blame the jock.  All the connections have been talking about is how this colt does whatever they ask him to do, start, stop, switch out, switch off.  But he didn\'t do that in the Belmont.  The way I saw it, 3/4 of the way down the backstretch the jock started to ask Chrome to go after the leaders and he didn\'t respond.  He wouldn\'t go up the inside.  So the jock pulled him to the outside. That seemed to help, but then he went 4w on the turn and had nothing left for the stretch.  So I think they just didn\'t have horse.

I know that the connections talked about the Mother Goose, but after that is there any indication of going to the Haskell or Travers?  I could envision her pulling off a win against her male counterparts.  Furthermore, it probably isn\'t likely that even money or higher would be possible if they ran in the midsummer 3yo classics.
