I think a comment needs to be made about D Wayne\'s work with Oxbow, Optimizer and
to a lesser extent, Skyring.

In the late 1980s, Lukas (Louisville: if you are going to come on an exchange
such as this and want to be taken seriously, get the spelling right) had a bit of
a reputation. This was during the time of Lady\'s Secret, who it seemed like was
entered in a couple of spots after she was obviously physically and probably
mentally no longer able to compete at the top level. Lukas was known as a top
trainer of two and three year olds who went through a lot of young horses,
allegedly almost bankrupting Gene Klein in the process. His work with turf
champion Steinlein and HOY Criminal Type (for the Old Calumet) were notable
exceptions, though my memory is that he did not develop these two as youngsters.

Oxbow, Optimizer and Skyring have been solid campaigners. They have been
veritable iron horses in the current day when most horses are making about 8
starts per year. One might question why obviously turf meant sorts such as
Optimizer and Skyring were raced in so many dirt spots, but D Wayne is not
bashful: He likes to \"rack em up\" in the big races (his words).

So Louisville, I agree it would be nice for racing if Lukas can bring Calumet
back to prominence. I would especially like to see the current Calumet owner send
an exploratory party down to South America with a wad of cash and return with the
Devils Red and Blue Calumet silks.

Hows that for a story, which has Silver Charm dreaming of sugarplums? A Calumet
owned, Lukas trained runner, wearing the Devil\'s Red and Blue colors, breaking
the Triple Crown drought.

Let\'s open a little window onto Human Nature:

When you have a strong opinion and stick to it, people might disagree just as strongly or just think you\'re way off somewhere else. It is when you are RIGHT! that people hate you.  

I paid close attention to your posts and you were spot on about how speed and closers would play. In so many words, you pointed out that, all things considered, speed held an upper hand going in. You were right.

I felt good about PM, a bit of rest, Mike Smith, three sharp interim works that got some real wind into him, and no blinkers. Unfortunately, I let myself, I take responsibility, be talked out of Oxbow catching second, had he been third and Orb second, (I had Incognito there) I would have scored mine...alas, alack..must get back up.

These horizontals are killing me. Gotta try verticals. And I realize now, to succeed at those, you have to have at least one good strong single. These threads have been a case in point.

...and all this time, I thought I was growing a tail...

Andy\'d get a more even reception if he didn\'t so often blame everyone and everything else but himself -- and dropped the act that his is the ultimate opinion --  when he comes up with one or another of his bad reads . . . self-confidence is required, in this endeavor, but one can carry it \'WAY too far . . .
