Question about numbers for Taris and Catalina Red

I was just curious for the methodology and reasoning behind the assignment of figs for these two winners on Derby day:


Horse, Time, Path, Figure, weight

Catalina Red, 1:20.79, 4w, -2.25, 118

Taris, 1:21.03 3w, -3.75, 120

Is this a matter of making the races make sense? Or are there other variables that I\'m not taking into account as to why Taris\' number is better than Catalina Red, when seemingly the latter ran a slightly better race. (Wind speed, track maintenance, etc)

The track was getting slower throughout the day, from the first on, both sprints and routes. Net about 2.5 points for routes, 4 for sprints. There were also some wind shifts in speed and direction but they weren\'t that great.

Keep in mind they space the races pretty good on Derby day. In an unrelated story, there was a stat out a few years ago that the per capita adult beverage consumption on Derby day was 2.5 for every man, woman and child.

With 100% certainty, that number increased after each race, as the day went on.
