Barbaro was an established Dirt Horse at the time of the Derby.

Animal Kingdom won only one Dirt Race in his entire Career. It just happened to be on the big day. A winning wager on Animal Kingdom, was more of and odds and opportunity bet than a shrewdly placed tactical wager.  He did run second in the Preakness, to the horse many factored would beat him.

Helium looks a little more promising as far as a Backable Horse, but a breakdown of his races doesnt suggest something remarkable.

Wasn\'t the greatest field in the world, and I\'m getting older so my memory may be starting to slip, but I literally cannot remember seeing a graded prep race won by a horse that broke 6+ lengths slow and went 6w nearly the whole way around the field.

On the first turn I would have given that horse <1% chance of winning. That felt remarkable to me.

I\'m here for the same reason you are, sensing an opportunity and agree Helium has postive indicators.
