stevens to ride noble causeway
« on: April 18, 2005, 07:29:31 PM »
the drf says prado chose SK. i\'m not so sure about that. zito had some not so kind words for prado after the blue grass, and stevens, who is one of the best closing riders in the game, fits NC perfectly. why would prado dump NC after seeing how well bandini ran?
.....

also, ritchey said rose might not get the mount on AA. looks like they might pick up p val. i was surprised to read that.

We need to see what the figures look like but the thing with Sun King is he really needed to get more out of the race than say Consolidator. The Tampa race was a gallop and then he comes into this prep needing to get a little something out of it.

Noble Causeway has the right guy because he is still learning. Why do you think Pat Day was up on him the day he won his 1X. Which by the way how many Derby winners have there been who have never won a Stakes or anything more than a 1X?

When Afleet Alex is up the track on Derby Day it will not be because of Jeremy Rose.

The Bandini bunch scored big on Saturday. They spent $60 Million to purchase the sire and now have a Blue Grass Stakes winner to shuttle around also.

Suffice it to say that Tabor and Co. are NOW OUT on FuPeg.

One day people will be asking Arthur Hancock, \"And now explain why you gave this horse away for $4.5 Million\"?

He\'s refering to his namesake.. Silver Charm, who made the Derby his first stakes win of any kind.. A unique accomplishment in the modern era.

Ferdinand and Funny Cide are recent rose donners that made the Derby their first GRADED stakes win.

Alysheba won the Blue Grass in advance of the first Saturday in May.

Silver Charm won the Del Mar Futurity, and I think the San Vincente as well, before Derby.  I\'m going from memory, but I have no doubt SC had won graded stakes before the Derby.

Rich..

That\'s right.. But I think \'Sheba was DQ\'d to third in that Blue Grass??

BG..

You\'re right too.. I was looking at notes that showed no Gr. Stake wins for Charm, but that was no ROUTE wins..

I am reasonably confident that Alysheba won a minor stakes race at Turfway at some point prior to the Derby.  I think this was after Latonia was rechristened Turfway, if I am wrong, then it was at Latonia.

By the way, I seem to recall (but could be wrong) that one of the very early triple crown winners broke his maiden in the Derby.

Alysheba had a maiden win and was DQ\'d from 1st to 3rd in Blue Grass. My favorite horse. I can see it all like it was yesterday. Dual qualifyer. 8-1 post time. Had $100 win and place on him.

Spectacular Bid? Hah!!! Alysheba was the best horse to ever look through a bridle!!

SoCal...i think that was Brokers Tip. That was the Derby with a pushing match between jocks if I remember my reading. I\'m sure the late Jim Bolus could tell you much more and remember it accurately. Its a shame he died as young as he did. Brokers Tip didn\'t go on to sweep it though. I can\'t tell you all the Triple Crown winners from memory but Brokers Tip certainly doesnt ring a bell.

Alysheba could have won it. Bid too.

I think the very first Triple Crown winner - Sir Barton - was a maiden until his Derby win.

3 Maidens have won the derby Buchanan 1884, Sir Barton 1919, and Brokers Tip 1933 but maidens were a common occurrence until the mid 1930\'s.   Nationalore gave it in 1998, he never won a race broke down in a Maiden race in 2000 and was euthanized.  He did finish 3rd in the 1997 Breeders Cup Juvenile.

I almost positive that Brokers Tip never raced again after the win, making him the only horse winner whose lone career win was the Derby..

I wonder what ever happened with that Korean fellow who had Nationalore.  He had some interesting horses, but I do not seem to see his name around anymore (Unfortunately, I cannot remember it, but I know it when I see it).

Also, I do recall Great Redeemer being entered in the Derby off an absolutely awful maiden record (I think even Zippy Chippy could beat him). That was a year where the contenders were so strong, a lot of people shied away so the maximum field size was not an issue.  It may have been the year of Spectacular Bid and Flying Paster (although I could be wrong).
