Bellamania didn\'t run all that bad considering the pace.

Sun King is no turn turn horse

Initial Interpretations:

Bellamania: Pace compromised. Wide compromised. Not a super horse. Certainly bounced

Bandini: Certainly Washed out, probably bounced.

Greeleys: Never in race early. Wasnt working well, probably bounced.

Afleet Alex: Probable regression. Most likely bounced.

High Limit: Not a rateable horse. They need to find a spot where he can wing.

They came home like pigs.

This has to come back as a really slow Derby. The race totally fell apart. They really crawled home on a track this fast.

I think several contenders were pace compromised. A few are probably better suited to 9F and a couple didn\'t run a lick.

By \"pace compromised\" do you mean not as good as Closing Argument?  He was essentially two lengths behind Bellamy Road the whole way.  Wider too.

At some point we\'ll know how TGraph scores it. My belief is the race was not a particular fast one, however the track may have been slowing slightly from the Three Chimney\'s on. It would be wise to defer to TGraph on that.

The one, two finishers probably were sitting on their best race. Figuring what they threw is gonna be the challenge.

I was all over Closing Argument in the Bluegrass and let the post in the Derby dissuade me. Its good that i did. If i\'d boxed him with Alex I\'d have lost more. Giacomo was a complete shock.

Is Bellamania a better horse than Closing Arguement at 10 marks?  Maybe not.

Interesting in a year when the winning conditions looked to be busted, Giacomo keeps them supreme. If Giacomo hadn\'t fired, CA would have busted them though.

TJGB says that Alex was hosed down. Hes a valiant competitor and may have run through his fatigue. I hope hes o.k. tough beat spa, i know u liked him.

another length wasn\'t gonna get me back my bets though...lol

Easiest Superfecta in history. Throw out that rabbit and box 19.  C\'mon, must be a few here that did that.

we all know how important ground loss is, thats why giacomo won, he was 5 wide then 6 wide, it took its toll.

CTC-

fyi

Greeley\'s broke slowly and made a big sweeping wide move.

If you can find a tape of the race that shows the whole field (instead of just the leaders like NBC showed), you\'ll see he made one of the more impressive moves of the race.

Could not sustain it though. He ducked in and tired badly in the final 1/8 and was not perservered with.

Captain,

\"By \"pace compromised\" do you mean not as good as Closing Argument? He was essentially two lengths behind Bellamy Road the whole way.\"

Right now it looks to me like CA ran a very good race. It\'s going to take me a while to review the replay and get a better guage on the performances.

Class,

Closing Argument ran the BEST race of anyone.  Closest to the pace and closest to the winner at the end.  He almost had it!  MONSTER race.

Yeah lots of wide too....

2.02.85 though, on that track how much monster is that?

Agreed from an energy expenditure perspective that was a big Race by CA. Not sure wide was all that bad though.

Can anyone out there reasonably explain CLOSING ARGUMENT\'s race???

One race since Feb 5th and he runs one of the best Derbies I have ever seen.

Good Luck,
Joe B.

Joe,

I didn\'t like CA much going in.

He was well beaten in the BG and didn\'t look like a horse that would like 10F to me. I guess he figured to be a little short in the BG and move forward off that, but I think his performance is as much a function of the Derby falling apart as it is of him running well.

I would have to say he probably ran better than the winner and AA, but I don\'t think it was a super performance. Pretty darn good though.

Class,

From a \"pace\" perspective, I don\'t see how you can say CA\'s performance is a function of the race falling apart in front of him.  He was within four lengths of the first quarter in .22 and change!  He pressed it the whole way.  Wide both turns to boot.  He made the first flight and held on.

What you are describing sounds more like the pace scenario for the winner.  Closing Argument\'s race is a different thing entirely.
