Has anyone on this board ever been to Royal Ascot? My GOD what a breathtaking facility. Yahoo sports has some really nice photos up today - opening day of the 5 day meet...George Washington ran 4th in a close finish of the Queen Anne Stakes...If you\'ve been - please share your experience

I live in Greenwich  Village. Other than that, no.

Have been at Ascot a few times, it\'s great. There may be a photo we can post of me in the monkey suit.

They do drink at that racecourse.

I think you can watch the races on TVG, and maybe OTB before Belmont.

I will be staying in Poole July 1-10. I would like to take a day and go to the races.I have a car and don\'t mind driving or taking a train a few hundred miles. Any suggestions on where to go? I would prefer to see the highest level of racing possible.I will be in London for Wimbledon 1 or 2 days and could piggyback a day at the races if it makes sense.  Thanks

Best day\'s racing will be at Sandown on July 7th (Saturday). Features the Gr1 Eclipse and could see the re-appearance of Derby winner Authorize. Sandown is in Esher on the south-west outskirts of London. Traffic will be a pain but you can always get the train (from Waterloo) to Esher and walk up though the course.

If you\'re up for it on the 1st there\'s a meeting at Salisbury (check out the cathedral as well if you go) which is just about the closest Flat-racing track to Poole. Quality will not be so good but it\'s an old downland course and you get real close to the action.

if you stay through the weekend, you could get to one of the nicest tracks in the world. the York first July meeting runs on Fri and Sat (13,14). it\'s the European Saratoga. they describe it as \"A two day meeting that features John Smiths Saturday : the informal party highlight of the year\". excellent racing, though the best comes later in the summer.

about a two hour train ride from London. the town is beautiful.

if you can\'t get there this year, try and match up the tennis and racing next year.

Thanks Michael D. and Mandown. Great information! Now I just need my passport which has been processing for 12 weeks.My Ohio Senator has put a Congressional expedite on the app. but the State Dept. hasn\'t even acknowledged them receiving the app. My check was cashed 12 weeks ago.  What a mess.

The Magnet Cup York meeting is very different from the August Ebor meeting. The \'informal party highlight of the year\' is a euphemism for busloads of inebriated Yorkshiremen attempting to wreak havoc.

John Smith\'s is a brewery and in the past they have organised bus trips from local pubs. The plentiful supply of the sponsor\'s product coupled with soccer fans looking for another way to spend a Saturday (it\'s the close season in the UK) can be a potent mix.

It\'s not a day for the faint-hearted.
