Would like to add some Driving Advice from another Staten Islander, one who has
invaded Monmouth Park from the North for the last 25 years or so-- if you are
traveling south on the GSP, fuggedabout getting off at exit 105 and getting
on Rte 36, which is a nightmare on an average weekday when there is racing.
Get off at exit 109, make a left on Newman Springs Road (Rte 520). Follow 520
(if you keep your eyes peeled, you may see a small luncheonette called Edies
(its next to a cemetery) which makes as good an omelette as you would want to
eat). Continue on 520, make a right on Seven Bridges Road, follow Seven Bridges
Road for 5 or so miles; it ends at the northern border of Monmouth Park.
Kind of a roundabout route, but you will miss most traffic, see some beautiful
homes and I recommend the cream cheese omelette.
If you are looking to keep your cholesterol down, take a right onto Shrewsbury
Ave off 520, then make a left on Sycamore Ave. Hang a right at the Little
Silver Train station and follow the road which will take you through Fort
Monmouth, past a small public marina, past the now closed Old Wharf Inn; the
northern edge of Monmouth is about 5 furlongs from the Old Wharf,
Either of these back door routes will keep you away from Rte 36, which as
Trackjohn says, is to be avoided at all costs.
