I watched the Pat Day \"Legends\" episode the other day on TVG and got to thinking just how much I miss the Jocks of yesteryear, especially in the So-Cal colony. When I first started playing the races out here, you had Shoe, Eddie Delahousaye, Gary Stevens, Chris McCarron, P Val, a young Kent Desormeaux - man it was like an all star race every day. This clip shows two of the giants on horseback. Great memories...

That was pretty good. I have my own story or two from that year. I was out in Calif for work when they ran what was really the Big Prep, The Strub. Same Big Three, Snow Chief, Ferdinand and Broad Brush. I was actually hanging with some of the Stute crew (the parts I can remember) and they were really high on Snow Chief that week. I was convinced Broad Brush was maturing into a horse better than both he and Ferdinand. Snow Chief and Ferdinand threw down coming down the stretch just like Broad Brush and Ferdinand did in the Big Cap with Snow Chief winning. In the Big Cap I was back east with No West Coast DRF, No Simulcast and hence No Play. The replay is all you need to know. Broad Brush paid really good that day too.........ouch

Hopeful Word who ran third started in the east under Carl Bowman when I was just getting hooked on racing. Had several \"Bet-Out\" scores on him (with a little inside info) as he moved right through his conditions and into Stakes company. They moved him west under Mandella for bigger and better things. And to get away from local demon Rapid Gray (Marty McGee will remember) who never lost in like 10 races at CD until my best friend had him singled in the last race of the Pick Six and he got bobbed on the line in the Clark........ouch

I miss those jocks also. When they all tucked in their boots in the same starting gate and snatched a hold of the reins before the starter kicked it. It was like the 27 Yankees batting order coming at you. Who do you pitch around or in this case throw out?

I have not seen the Pat Day Legends but I am sure it was good one. I have a lot of respect for he and Bailey in particular. They both knew they had a lot of talent but had to overcome a couple of obstacles before they could fulfill it.

Firm synthetic. Loose synthetic. I\'m hearing horsmen (Bill Mott for example with regard to Go Between in DRF) throw these terms around. If a guy like that feels it\'s an accurate appraisal of what these courses are like and that there are more than the obvious differences between Keeneland and DelMar and the highway that was SA or the Cushion at Hollywood, is there any reason we can\'t get a like appraisal as to course condition from the track? Like, instead of \'Cushion Track.\' They must be able to qualify the general condition of the course in the same terms as firm, good, yielding or soft. It might help a bit with handle if players feel they are getting a little more information? Or maybe even just publish maintenance schedules like when they use the power rake to really stir things up if the rubber from the attic has settled too much (apologies to Nicky.)

Silver - the most intruiging part of the Pat Day feature is when he admits to costing Easy Goer his maiden race as well as the Preakness. He admitted to using up too much horse down the backside messing around with P Val on Sunday Silence in the Preakness. It was his one regret as he knew he was on the better animal.

Passing the 1/8th pole in the Preakness, he tried to swing EG\'s head outward and float out SS, but EG\'s legs were just too tired and rubbery at that point and all the horse did was turn his head instead of chnage paths out into SS. It was a very cool interview.

He said his best ride ever was on Wild Again in the \'84 Classic. He didn\'t even secure the mount until the day before. Watch it if you can. It\'s really, really good.

The thing that struck me the most, was how much better Denman was back then as an announcer then he is today. Perhaps age has cought up with him some too.

I would be remiss to not comment on what a great finish it was.

I have a question regarding the comments on Heatseeker. \"Coming off a big effort on only three weeks rest he\'s about 50/50 to bounce\"

During the weeks leading up to the \'07 Breeders Cup, I scoured every sheet I could find, and the only horse I could find that didn\'t bounce after a running a negative on poly was Greg\'s Gold.  I think there were about 20 or so samples.  I played against SS, and Hard Spun based on that, and Hard Spun became the second (I know of) to run a negative number after running a negative on poly.  I haven\'t kept good track since, but I haven\'t seen any reason to believe the trend has changed.

FWIW the numbers are similarly bad for runners putting up negatives on turf.  

I know there is a lot going on @ T-graph with the new product and whatever else, but it may be worth doing a database study before the derby.  Quite possible a couple horses be short prices after cooking their goose in the Blue Grass and Santa Anita Derby.

Heatseeker (ml 8-1) - two fast synth races, one over the SA cushion. gets in at 116. gets top jock.

Big Booster (ml 15-1) - ran well at 24-1 in last year\'s synth HolGldCp. has a fast race over the SA cushion. gets in light. gets a perfect post.

use 3,10 in exotics.

JB is down at GP this weekend.

We have done studies concerning derby entrants and tops run. Those studies have been attached or included with products and postings. They may still be available here somewhere but I\'m not quite sure where. We\'ll update the study to include 2007 closer to Derby day.

I will say that spring 3yos running negative numbers is different from a 5yo running them. Also, Heatseeker paired the top after only one hiccup. He\'s obviously an improving horse and the next step up is to pair the top in  consecutive races.

I agree with you on Heatseeker..Absolutely love him tomorrow at what could be 7-1 and over..This horse is getting really good..Monterey Jazz is the biggest bet against horse tomorrow..

I can\'t figure out which way the betting will go.  I have the race between a horse at 6/1 on the M/L and a 15/1 M/L.  I need to see the post parade before I decide if it is worth a bet.  Very tough card at SA today.  This is the only race I am interested in.
