Preakness Lessons

Two observations from Preakness. Macho Again’s figure in his last was great and a must use in Exactas, but I threw him out because it was in a 7-½ furlong sprint. In retrospect, which is always 20-20, He never really showed that he was any better at a sprint or route and the figure could have logically been interpreted as an indicator that as an improvement in a young horse that could have transferred over to a route as well. His failure at 1 1/8 was on synthetic after being bumped hard at start. In addition, he was starting from the #1 post, always an advantage at Pimlico, and rode on or near the rail most of the race until tipping out for his big late run.

Gayego was major disappointment since I threw out his Derby failure due to his horrible trip. It probably was an indicator horse was going off form but, unlike Macho Again’s race, could have correctly been read either way.

A great example today of the \"throw it up against the wall\" theory.  I keyed BB on top w/ RR for 2nd thru 4th with all in the other two spots.  Two horses that I never would have used helped key a decent Super.

Lost the P6 when my other single -- Bear Now -- didn\'t win.

Jerry -- I guess you win the Gayego/Hey Byrn bet.

Robbie Albarado cost his connections a placing or two with his very wide impatient move on the turn.

He\'s butchered that poor horse three times this year.Found the dead rail in the Lanes End.Saved ground but found trouble in the Lexington.Didn\'t need to pull the trigger when he did in the Preakness.Jeremy Rose and Leparoux waited a little longer and didn\'t use their horses on the turn like Albarado.Made all the difference between 2nd,3rd and 4th.

Robbie always finds the part of the track that the other jockeys are avoiding.  Put Bailey or Stevens on Curlin last year and we would be talking about the 2nd straight Triple Crown winner.

David, I\'ve been meaning to ask you. If I recall what you said about your Derby bet (I may not), you boxed 11 horses in the tris, then came back with BB on top of them. What return did you get on that bet? And what return on the Preakness? That one sounds better.

Sorry for the late response -- been traveling.

Derby

We boxed 11 horses in a trifecta for $990 and the tri came back $1,700+ for the $1.

We played BB over 11 horses in the Super which cost another $990 and returned $29k pre-tax.

We played a few smaller super tix as well that whiffed.

Total investment ~$2,500 for a $31k return

Preakness

I played a Super key for $60 BB over 5 horses then $270 in Super keys of BB w/ RR w/ all w/ all keying RR for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th

Total investment $330 for an $1,100+ return.

We did better in the Derby.
