I few years back, I was 5 for 5 going into the final leg. I had singled a 15-1 shot in the final leg. By post time my 15-1 shot was washed-out and about 50-1. As the horses were entering the gates, they scratched him. The Fav ended up winning and ended up hitting hit. Sometimes you have to be lucky in this game, and thats at every level.
Too funny. I just had almost the near opposite happen to me. Short story is this. Today is my birthday and every year it falls on or near Memorial Weekend. I have a few people that always come out and we get our grins and giggles playing the local strip at Canterbury. This year Sat. was the day, and the pick 6 figured to be worth around 25k. So I decided to dope it out. The first and third races of the sequence were for two year olds at 3 1/2 furlongs, all debut runners, the second race of the sequence was a bunch of maiden walking feed bills so anyone could win, and you could make an argument for 6 of them in the last. I figured it would take 4 tickets and $480 to have a reasonable chance to hit. But rather than put the $480 in, I decided to go cheap and play a \"what the hell we\'re here\" ticket. I singled a long shot in the second race of the sequence knowing we would have almost no chance to win but if we did we would probably take the whole pool. Because I was playing that way, I then decided to go ultra-cheap and singled one horse in the first race as well because I figured why spend the money when we don\'t have much of a chance in the next race anyway. The ticket looked like this:
1
7
4,5,6
5
1,5
1,2,3,5,8,9
$72
Well, we missed the first race when our single ran second so that was that. Then in the second race of the sequence, our long shot wound up flipping in the gate and we got transferred to #4 horse, who wound up winning and was favored by $62. We then proceeded to walk through the rest of the raced and wound up with 5/6. Had I known I was going to wind up on the favorite in the second race I would have easily went 3 deep in the first and we would have had an easy $6200 score.
This brings up a good point. I really disagree with the way they transfer you to the favorite when someone scratches in the middle of the pick 6. If I were playing a more serious ticket I would probably already have the favorite, or if I didn\'t there would probably be another I would like more. Who needs to hit the thing twice? They should give the option to pick another horse or take a refund on the scratch only.
