Did You all see the pic of Big Brown's shoe?
« on: June 24, 2008, 04:14:13 PM »
Bloodhorse  magazine has some pretty graphic pics of the loose shoe with the nail sticking out- I wonder if we will ever know if that was the reason he didn\'t fire. All I know is I couldn\'t run ten yards with a loose heel.

Jerry, I think you\'ll have to admit that those are a very interesting set of pictures.

Years ago , without  high resolution images this would have gone undiscovered.

Assuming this threw BB\'s stride off enough to cause discomfort and Kent D to \'feel\' there was something wrong, it would actually explain the pullup.

None of this proves BB would have won, but it\'s a world better  than \'he bounced so badly he couldn\'t even finish\'

He basically meant there is always a reason, except the obvious reason.

Maybe over the course of three races where one horse is actually best in all three (a rare occurrence to begin with), there often is an odd reason/excuse for the loss because there are so many things that can go wrong over a series of three horse races. It doesn\'t have to be all or nothing (all bounces or all legitimate excuses). It can easily (and IMO most likely) be a mix of horses with legitimate excuses and horses that wore down from the demands of the races.

Rich,

The only obvious reason is post race detection of injury/illness. All other reasons advanced are pure speculation.

My Initial reaction was the same as yours Jerry.  But after seeing these new photos I have to say this seems to be a legitimate reason.  Running with a loose shoe has got to cause some kind of discomfort or traction problems..no?..
Anybody know what happens to a horse who runs with a loose shoe?

No, but I know what it feels like when a horse steps on my foot.

The quarter crack guy said he feels it MAY alter a horses natural gate.

No, but I know what happens to a horse ridden by a jockey with a loose screw.

Glue-ons were in front.  It was a rear shoe that came loose.
