Oh, I\'m not so sure, Boscar. The phrase (and its variants) is of uncertain origin, but it is reasonably presumed to be American, and perhaps originating among jazz musicians, as in, to blow on an instrument. So, 1945 is about right for this phrase to have been arising from the colloquial to wider usage; being on the lips, as it were, of a horseman, if not the members of the Jockey Club.
The beauty part is, it works both ways. I mean, by Menow out of Explosion???
