Sustained speed at 7F or a 1 turn mile
« on: April 14, 2010, 06:59:35 AM »
Found this to be a good indicator of who might be able to get a 1 1/4 particularly when looking at 2 yo form. Woody Stephens mentions this in his book, specifically to 3 yos who can press or wire at a mile. Who\'s going to argue with Woody?

Good Luck,
Joe B.

What?  Just because he got lucky and won the Belmont 5 straight years?  Not only did he win the Classics, he was a classic.

I think this is accurate.  Another way to put it, horses that can go out and lay down methodical 12 sec 1/8ths usually have a great chance to get the classic distances.  ESK, END, DM and Drosselmeyer come to mind this year off the top of my head.

AH the 12\'s and 24\'s.  How many can you string together?

24 -slow work for a 2yo

48- nice work, can win a claimer

1:12 - 6f slow sprinter

1:36 - 1M -solid 50K claimer, ALW horse

1:48 - 1 1/8 Gr1 stakeswinner

2:00  1 1/4 - Secretariat, souped up track winner (Monarchos)

2:24  1 1/2  - SECRETARIAT
