Santa Monica exacta payoff
« on: January 27, 2004, 07:55:57 AM »
Someone or some group must have crushed this one; payoff (for $2) was $24 with GOT KOKO and SIGHTSEEK out of the mix and 16-1 BUFFY underneath $5 ISLAND FASHION.

Good Luck,
Joe B.

On a totally unrelated note, word is SA has gotten very agressive in patrolling the barns several times on raceday to check on in-today horses. It reportedly will be trickier at HOL, where the chief suspect has his barn positioned so there is only one route of access, and he can see people coming 100 yards away.

So yeah, I wasn\'t happy with that exacta price myself.

\"Totally Unrelated\"?

lol

If Dr. Sauce wins at 10% at Santa Anita and 34% at Hollywood, they will be walking his barn at Hollywood next year as well.

The odds have to be taken in context. This was a 6 horse field with a 3-2 strong 2nd choice winning and the 4th choice finishing 2nd. The favorite was very vulnerable due to her SA course record. The 2 longest shots finished 5th and 6th. 24 bucks for 2 isn\'t that bad when you consider the above. Could\'ve been a little bigger but again, it was a 6 horse field with 2 horses that were pretty unplayable. While certainly not the most likely second place finisher, it wasn\'t as if Buffy was unplayable. The first race had a 4-5 fav over the 4th choice in a 6 horse field and it paid $8.

Pardon my ingorance... who\'s the chief suspect? Frankel, O\'Neill, Baffert?

This is a \"totally unrelated\" question:

Why is MEDAGLIA D\'ORO running in the DONN@ GP instead of using the San Antonio as his Big Cap prep??

Good Luck,

I\'m not as in tune to whats going on at Gulfstream as I once was, but I remember when Frank Passero would come out of nowhere to vie for meet training titles there. His win percentage was phenomenal at GP. His crew was caught rubbing \"pepper ointment\" on the horses genitals just prior to a race and since then he has not been nearly as effective at that meet. Michael Gill/Mark Shuman had considerable jump up success last year. I suspect you are implying that theres not a great deal of backside oversight at GP and I have reason to believe that is/was accurate.

But the real Dr. Sauce has been cheating for the last four to five years. I don\'t purport to know precisely what is being used but the \"usual suspect\" is EPO which was developed to treat chemotherapy anemia. It increases the number of oxygen carrying red blood cells. It is also believed EPO diminishes lactic acid build up, which may merely be the result of greater available oxygen.

There are different forms of EPO. Which form is currently in vogue is debatable, however injection of the human form is believed to cause the horse to lose the natural equine red blood cell building ability of its bone marrow and once EPO injections are discontinued the horse can become anemic. A recent Dr. Sauce retiree (Dollar Bill) developed laminitis and will miss the breeding season. Whether his problem is related to anemia is anyone\'s guess. If he expires a bone marrow test might be interesting. Compounding the problems with detecting EPO is that it dissipates from the horses system within about 48 hours. Though it is my understanding that New York is taking a stand against it.

Anyone speculating as to the use of EPO with this trainer might want to scrutinize his retirees. Other than Aptitude, (Who is fine to the best of my knowledge), I can\'t think of any others right now.

One possible reason for M D\'ORO running in Donn vs. SanAntonio as a prep for Big Cap: purse is twice as much($250k vs. $500k).

Doesn\'t MDO love the SA surface and has never run at Gulf. Frankel ships him in to Gulf but doesn\'t ship Midas Eyes for a $300k sprint Stake last Saturday over a surface he loves. Go figure.

As far as Gulfstream Security goes there is an existing Underground Mafia Security. Last year when the Gil/Shuman Team began claiming everything in sight a small group of trainers headed by Peter Walder and Iwinski took matters into their own hands.

Seems this group has an unwritten rule to not claim from each other, therefore securing the likelihood of keeping their animal when trying to steal a purse with a sharp drop. Gil/Shuman didn\'t fit in with their plans so they began to KEY his CAR DOOR, LET the AIR OUT OF TIRES, etc.

My advice to Frankel, if he rents a car take all the insurance coverage he can get.
