Derbyprep Day Afternoon Impressions

1) Very Impressive: Mr. Gural\'s new grandstand at the Meadowlands. Convenient
parking, and $3 gives access to a desk with a monitor and electrical outlets.
WiFi of course provided. A nearby bar serving Goose Island Harvest Ale ice cold
at a reasonable $6 a pop. A user friendly facility staffed with helpful people.
Strange to look out across the racetrack and see the old Meadowlands grandstand,
which for some reason I assumed had been dismantled.

2) Very Impressive: Two maiden breakers on the GP card: The Mott trained kin to
Super Saver, and the Shug trained Tapit filly, a half to Verazzano.

3) TAP remains the Master of the big day undercard and the Derby prep. Despite
Silver\'s observation that TAP\'s Derby troops are dwindling, it looks like he has
at least three headed for the Derby: Constitution, Intense Holiday and We Miss
Poly. Did I miss anyone?  He has at least 11 nominated to the (ha!) Twin
Spires.com Wood Memorial, not counting a few nominees who ran this past weekend.

How about that Enchanted Rock as a broodmare?  Offspring seem very brittle but extremely talented.  Looked like La Madrina definitely has graded stakes potential.  I realize there have been many other dams that have dropped 3 GSW in total before, but think it would be somewhat unusual for the first 3 foals to be GSW winners, if that ends up happening.

Did you miss the opener? Ian Wilkes 2nd time Whitney homebred Viva Majorca a 12 length, 98 Beyer winner.

Pletcher has nice Gala Award in Blue Grass.

The gold standard for me was the pint sized Gold Beauty, herself a champion
sprinter. Her 1985 (first) foal, Maplejinsky, won both the Monmouth Oaks and the
Alabama. Gold Beauty\'s 86 foal, Dayjur, was champion sprinter in Europe and cost
himself a BC Sprint victory when jumping a shadow at Belmont. Maplejinsky went
on to produce Sky Beauty, who won the Alabama and many other graded stakes,
including the old Triple Tiara for fillies -- Acorn, Mother Goose, CCA Oaks. Sky
Beauty was champion older female of 1994 and was elected to Racing\'s HOF in 2011.

Of course would be remiss not to mention Better than Honour, who produced
Belmont Stakes winners for two consecutive years -- Jazil and Rags to Riches,
and the folowing year produced Peter Pan winner (and Belmont wiseguy horse)
Casino Drive.
