Pletcher likes to give his horses plenty of time between races, and he achieves great results when he does. According to statistics for the past five years from Daily Racing Form’s Formulator software, Pletcher wins stakes at a 31 percent rate when his horses have been laid off 90 days or more. When the layoff is 30 days or less, his percentage drops to 21 percent. Pletcher acknowledges his disinclination to run horses with short rest; only two of his Derby starters have come back to run in the Preakness 14 days later.
